The production of meltwater from glacier ice, which is exposed at the margins of land ice during the summer, is responsible for a large proportion of glacier mass loss. The rate of meltwater production from glacier ice is especially sensitive to its physical structure and chemical composition which combine to determine the albedo of glacier ice. However, the optical properties of near-surface glacier ice are not well known since most prior work has focused on laboratory-grown ice or deep cores. Here, we demonstrate a measurement technique based on diffuse propagation of nanosecond-duration laser pulses in near-surface glacier ice that enables the independent measurement of the scattering and absorption coefficients, allowing for a complete description of the processes governing radiative transfer. We employ a photon-counting detector to overcome the high losses associated with diffuse optics. The instrument is highly portable and rugged, making it optimally suited for deployment in remote regions. A set of measurements taken on Crook and Collier Glaciers, Oregon, serves as a demonstration of the technique. These measurements provide insight into both physical structure and composition of near-surface glacier ice and open new avenues for the analysis of light-absorbing impurities and remote sensing of the cryosphere.

Introduction
The foetal programming hypothesis posits that optimising early life factors e.g. maternal diets can help avert the burden of adverse childhood outcomes e.g. childhood obesity. To improve applicability to public health messaging, we investigated whether maternal whole diet quality and inflammatory potential influence childhood adiposity in a large consortium.
MethodsWe harmonized and pooled individual participant data from up to 8,769 mother-child pairs in 7 European mother-offspring cohorts. Maternal early-, late-, and whole-pregnancy dietary quality and inflammatory potential were assessed with Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII), respectively. Primary outcome was childhood overweight and obesity (OWOB), defined as age- and sex-specific body-mass-index-z score (BMIz) > 85th percentile based on WHO growth standard. Secondary outcomes were sum-of-skinfold-thickness (SST), fat-mass-index (FMI) and fat-free-mass-index (FFMI) in available cohorts. Outcomes were assessed in early- [mean (SD) age: 2.8 (0.3) y], mid- [6.2 (0.6) y], and late-childhood [10.6 (1.2) y]. We used multivariable regression analyses to assess the associations of maternal E-DII and DASH with offspring adiposity outcomes in cohort-specific analyses, with subsequent random-effects meta-analyses. Analyses were adjusted for maternal age, pre-pregnancy BMI, parity, lifestyle factors, energy intake, educational attainment, offspring age and sex.
ResultsA more pro-inflammatory maternal diet, indicated by higher E-DII, was associated with a higher risk of offspring late-childhood OWOB [pooled-OR (95% CI) comparing highest vs. lowest E-DII quartiles: 1.22 (1.01,1.47) for whole-pregnancy and 1.38 (1.05,1.83) for early-pregnancy; both P < 0.05]. Moreover, higher late-pregnancy E-DII was associated with higher mid-childhood FMI [pooled-β (95% CI): 0.11 (0.003,0.22) kg/m2; P < 0.05]; trending association was observed for whole-pregnancy E-DII [0.12 (-0.01,0.25) kg/m2; P = 0.07]. A higher maternal dietary quality, indicated by higher DASH score, showed a trending inverse association with late-childhood OWOB (pooled-OR (95% CI) comparing highest vs. lowest DASH quartiles: 0.58 (0.32,1.02; P = 0.06). Higher early-pregnancy DASH was associated with lower late-childhood SST [pooled-β (95% CI): -1.9 (-3.6,-0.1) cm; P < 0.05] and tended to be associated with lower late-childhood FMI [-0.34 (-0.71,0.04) kg/m2; P = 0.08]. Higher whole-pregnancy DASH tended to associate with lower early-childhood SST [-0.33 (-0.72,0.06) cm; P = 0.10]. Results were similar when modelling DASH and E-DII continuously.
DiscussionAnalysis of pooled data suggests that pro-inflammatory, low-quality maternal antenatal diets may influence offspring body composition and obesity risk, especially during mid- or late-childhood. Due to variation of data availability at each timepoint, our results should be interpreted with caution. Because most associations were observed at mid-childhood or later, future studies will benefit from a longer follow-up.

Background
Anxiety disorders are common, and cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) is a first-line treatment. Candidate gene studies have suggested a genetic basis to treatment response, but findings have been inconsistent.
AimsTo perform the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) of psychological treatment response in children with anxiety disorders (n = 980).
MethodPresence and severity of anxiety was assessed using semi-structured interview at baseline, on completion of treatment (post-treatment), and 3 to 12 months after treatment completion (follow-up). DNA was genotyped using the Illumina Human Core Exome-12v1.0 array. Linear mixed models were used to test associations between genetic variants and response (change in symptom severity) immediately post-treatment and at 6-month follow-up.
ResultsNo variants passed a genome-wide significance threshold (P=5×10–8) in either analysis. Four variants met criteria for suggestive significance (P<5×10–6) in association with response post-treatment, and three variants in the 6-month follow-up analysis.
ConclusionsThis is the first genome-wide therapygenetic study. It suggests no common variants of very high effect underlie response to CBT. Future investigations should maximise power to detect single-variant and polygenic effects by using larger, more homogeneous cohorts.

Summary
Academical dress was worn routinely at the Scottish universities during the late medieval period and the Renaissance, going into decline between the Reformation and the reintroduction of hoods during the nineteenth century. We shall examine the use of academical dress by graduates and officials in the three pre-Reformation university institutions in Scotland—St. Andrews, Glasgow, and Aberdeen—from the fifteenth to the mid-sixteenth centuries. A discussion of the varying effects of the Reformation on academical dress at each university in the decades following the disruptive events of 1560 will follow. Few known pictorial sources of evidence exist, but there are other sources in the form of contemporary statutes, inventories, and university annals.
The earliest European universities were Bologna, constituted as a guild of students ca. 1088, and Paris, constituted as a guild of masters and granted its charter in 1200. Later institutions usually followed one of these constitutional precedents, or a hybrid of the two. Scotland saw three university foundations in the fifteenth century; in earlier times, students travelled abroad for education—mostly to Paris and to other universities in France. Instruction in the faculties of arts was based on the classical trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) and quadrivium (geometry, arithmetic, music, and astronomy). After graduation, further study in the higher faculties of law (canon and civil), medicine, and theology provided training for legal practitioners, physicians, and the incumbents of many rectories and vicarages; in 1496 all barons and wealthy freeholders were required by law to send their eldest sons to the universities to study the arts and law.
Students, exclusively male during this period, were usually in minor orders, but not all were destined for the priesthood; they went on to form the administrative elite of the country after graduation, and one marker of their status was academical dress, which differed according to educational progression and was worn both within and outside the universities. Such dress was not monastic in nature but was sober and indicated clerkly status; it was generally similar across western Europe in the medieval period and basically consisted of an undertunic (subtunica), an overtunic (supertunica), and a hood (caputium).

Background
We previously reported an association between 5HTTLPR genotype and outcome following cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) in child anxiety (Cohort 1). Children homozygous for the low-expression short-allele showed more positive outcomes. Other similar studies have produced mixed results, with most reporting no association between genotype and CBT outcome.
AimsTo replicate the association between 5HTTLPR and CBT outcome in child anxiety from the Genes for Treatment study (GxT Cohort 2, n = 829).
MethodLogistic and linear mixed effects models were used to examine the relationship between 5HTTLPR and CBT outcomes. Mega-analyses using both cohorts were performed.
ResultsThere was no significant effect of 5HTTLPR on CBT outcomes in Cohort 2. Mega-analyses identified a significant association between 5HTTLPR and remission from all anxiety disorders at follow-up (odds ratio 0.45, P = 0.014), but not primary anxiety disorder outcomes.
ConclusionsThe association between 5HTTLPR genotype and CBT outcome did not replicate. Short-allele homozygotes showed more positive treatment outcomes, but with small, non-significant effects. Future studies would benefit from utilising whole genome approaches and large, homogenous samples.

This research is comprised of understanding the linear photophysical properties of various dyes to better understand the more complicated nonlinear optical properties. Determining structure property relationships of a series of structurally closely related chromophores is the key in understanding the drivers for the various photophysical properties. In this paper we survey the effect of physically changing the Pt poly-yne structure on the S0-S1 and T1-Tn absorption properties for each of the chromophores. A series of structurally modified platinum poly-ynes have been studied using experimental methods including UV/Vis absorption and nanosecond laser flash photolysis. We found that with extension of the ligand length both the ground and triplet excited state absorption shift to lower energies. Comparing the absorption properties of the ligands and butadiynes with the platinum containing versions reveal that the S1 and Tn exciton is localized on one portion of the ligand with extension and not conjugated through the whole molecule. Changing the phosphine R group results in little effect to the absorption properties except when the R group is conjugated in the case of phenyl. However, changing the R group results in varied materials properties.

The fact that laying hens prefer to lay in a nest is not evidence in itself that a suitable nest-site is necessary for the hens’ well-being. Stronger evidence would be found if hens were prepared to pay some cost to use a nest-site. The objective of this study is to quantify the strength of individual hens’ nesting motivation in terms of meaningful measures such as overcoming aversive obstacles, work or time.
To investigate the motivation to gain access to a nestbox, hens were floor housed in groups of four in a pen containing food and water. Access to a nesting pen containing two nestboxes, could be restricted using a number of obstacles such as a narrow gap, a water bath and a swing door. Between trials hens were singly housed in wire-floored cages containing a perch and a nestbox. Results indicate that hens made less entries of longer duration to the nesting pen (Means + s.e in Figures 1 and 3) on treatment days with an obstacle than on control days without an obstacle. There was little disruption of use of the nest box (Figures 2 and 4). Hens that were due to lay made more visits on both control (C Egg) and treatment (T Egg) days (Figure 1), which may indicate greater motivation to explore the whole pen before oviposition.
